Park in Uman.
The first written mention refers to 1616. The origin
of the name comes from the river Umanka Most of
the buildings in Uman are quite old, made of brick
and several stories high. Within the city there
are several small museums. The Museum of Fine Arts
is located in a former Polish palace almost 300
years old. Another museum exhibited historical Ukrainian
handcrafts, architecture and tools. A beautiful
park named Sofiyvka is also proudly owned by the
city. It was created over 300 years ago by a Polish
count to honor his wife, "the most beautiful

Zhytomyr, also Zhitomir, city, capital of Zhytomyr
Region, northern Ukraine, situated on the Teterev
River. Located in an agricultural region, Zhytomyr
is a transportation center and a market for lumber
and grain. Manufactures include furniture and linen.
An agricultural institute is located in the city.
Zhytomyr was founded as early as the 9th century.
It passed to Lithuania in 1320, to Poland in 1569,
and to Russia in 1793. |

Nizhin is situated on the Oster River.
It is a rail terminus on the main Moscow-Kiev line
and an agricultural trade center. Industries include
engineering, food processing, and the manufacture
of machinery and railroad cars. Known in the 11th
cent., the city was the center of the Nizhyn Ukrainian
Cossack regiment from 1649 to 1782. It became an
important trading center in the 17th and 18th cent.
After Greek merchants received permission to settle
there in 1657. |
